The Voices of Christian Working Moms

Newly Released Book

Today I had the wonderful opportunity of visiting some friends who live in the foothills of a mountain. The leaves are turning colors and it was absolutely gorgeous. I’m more and more amazed each day at what a wonderful artist and Creator our God is. His Majesty is wonderful. There really are not enough words to describe the God we serve. Take time today to ask your children what they like most about God. Welcome to all the new CWMs who have joined our community. I really appreciate Jennifer taking time to be interviewed today.

Jennifer is a 31 year old married CWM who lives in the United States. She has two daughters ages 3 and 1. Abby is a school based mental health counselor.

Jennifer shares her perspective on the joys of being a CWM. I have many, many joys related to being a Christian mom, but I would not say I am a "joyful working mom."  I am very thankful for my job as it provides for my family, but I struggle with being away from my children and home.  With that said, I know God is with me through it all.  In fact, I used to work a job with long hours (8am-6pm, then add the commute time) and I prayed for God to help me find a way to have better hours and more time at home. God heard my prayer and moved in my life by providing a job that is in a school. Now I am home by 3:30pm and off all summer.  I thank God for the precious time he has given me.  Also, I do enjoy the type of work that I do. I get to help children every day through my job as a counselor.  It helps knowing that even though I am working outside of the home, I am doing the type of work that fulfills me, a helping profession.  Then when I get home from work, I am so excited and happy to see my girls that I savor every moment we have together!
My main struggle as a CWM is with myself.  My mom was a working mom and I had always thought that I would be a working mom also.   I thought this way until I had my daughter, then everything changed.  I had an overwhelming desire to stay at home with her.  Unfortunately, my husband and I had student loan debt, a mortgage based on both of our incomes, a car payment and credit card debt.  There was no way I could stay at home.  So my biggest struggle is with my own self, I feel envious of moms who have the option of staying home with their kids and I tend to distance myself from them.  Unfortunately, many of those moms are women in my church, woman that I desire to be close with, but my own resentment keeps me from being close to them.  I know God is working in my life with this issue and I have seen His hand at work with my heart as I continue to lean onto God's shoulder to help me through my feelings.
Favorite Bible Verse:
My favorite verse at this time comes from a Bible verse we had the kids memorize at Vacation Bible Camp.  As we were teaching the kids the verse, I realized God was speaking to me with this verse!
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, submit to him in all your ways and he will make your paths straight.
What is God teaching you right now?
I believe God is teaching me that he has a plan for my life and it is part of a bigger plan, an eternal plan.  Right now, I am learning to SUBMIT (I really have a hard time doing this) to God's plan and follow him with a JOYFUL heart.  Even if I think things should be different or even if I think things are hard; living a life of JOY, Peace, patience, faithfulness, kindness, goodness and self control is to be my goal and God is with me through it all!
Jennifer shares words of Encouragement for other Christian Working Moms:
My encouragement is that God is listening to our hearts desires and he does respond.  I saw this when I shared with God my worries about how my husband and I worked till late in the evening.  I worried about who would be home for my girls after school.  God responded!  A job posted in a school setting which was perfect.  I thought I messed up the interview, but a friend told me "Jen, if God wants you in that job, you can't mess it up."  Just hours after she told me this, I was offered the job.  I truly believe God grants our prayers and I am so thankful!

Final Thoughts

Thanks Jennifer for showing us how God has faithfully worked in your life. I think one of the hardest Biblical principles I have had to relearn many times in my life is that God is in control and sovereign in my life and my children’s lives. Oh how we think we are in control and at times want to be in control, but we are most fulfilled when we trust and realize God is in control.

Till next time,
